Yes, let’s do five stars.

First of all, the chorus is fantastic. And everything else in the song supports it: short intro, short verses, short bridge, nothing extra. Three and a half minutes. Couldn’t be much better. (Weird bass line in the chorus, though. I’ve decided not to let that bother me.)

From the first note on, the song has the feel of longing, the loss of something, sadness – and beauty. During the verses, Bruce adds to this by his peaceful, fragile delivery, only adding some more power in the chorus. His performance is capped by the last chorus where he jumps to the high octave more often, for a great dramatic effect.

In all its simplicity, not one of Bruce’s most ambitious songs, but one of his very best in this century at least.
